The Parenting Toolkit book by Caroline Penney was published in 2018. Caroline and Catherine Kearney subsequently developed a 9 week Parenting Toolkit course for parents and caregivers, as well as a range of training packages for anyone working with families.
The 9 week Parenting Toolkit course for parents covers the skills and topics covered in the Parenting Toolkit book and is delivered in an engaging style with clearly structured sessions which include easily accessible learning activities.
The Parenting Toolkit training for professionals is available in intensive, comprehensive, online and in person formats, aimed at meeting the differing needs of busy staff teams and individuals. The training content includes the theory and practice of parenting education, including but not limited to, advanced communication skills, positive discipline strategies, emotional literacy and empathic parenting skills, child led play, descriptive praise and stress management. It also covers social learning theory, systemic family therapy interventions, problems in child development and communication with distressed children. The training includes facilitation skills for running group based courses or using the Parenting Toolkit material on a one to one basis. It aims to develop workers’ skills and understanding of group work theory, group process and parent engagement.
Parenting Toolkit courses for parents, caregivers and professionals are offered with the option to receive certification through Open College Network. Certification for the 9 week Parenting Toolkit course for parents is offered from Entry level to Level 2. Training packages for professionals offer Level 3 certification.
